Below are simple, step‑by‑step instructions for paying your federal and Minnesota individual income taxes online from your bank account. 


These options are secure, free (bank payments) * and provide confirmation for your records.


*For an additional fee, you can also pay using a credit card or via other methods.

Payment instructions are provided for convenience only. Taxpayers are responsible for selecting the correct payment type, tax year, and payment amount.

Federal Taxes — IRS Direct Pay (Free, Bank Account)


IRS Direct Pay allows you to pay federal individual income taxes directly from your domestic bank account (located in the US). No account setup is required.


  • IRS Direct Pay website:

What You’ll Need

  • A previously filed federal tax return (used for identity verification)
  • Your bank routing and account numbers
  • Amount you are planning to pay


Additional Information

  • Payments can be changed or canceled up to 2 business days before the scheduled payment date
  • Be sure the payment date is correct — the default date may not be what you expect
  • Always save your confirmation page - an emailed confirmation doesn't contain all pertinent information.


Keep for Your Records

Always save or print the confirmation page from your payment that shows:

  • tax type
  • tax period applied to
  • payment date
  • dollar amount paid

Federal Balance Due (Paying with your Tax Return)


  Use this option if you are paying tax owed with your filed return.   


  • IRS DIRECT PAY


Getting Started

  1. Click Make a Payment.
  2. Apply Payment To: 1040 - Income Tax
  3. Reason for Payment: Balance Due or Payment Plan/Installment Agreement
  4. Tax Year: The year of the return reflecting the balance due


Identify Validation**

  1. Tax Year for Verification: Use a previous tax year for which you have already filed a return.
  2. Personal Information: Enter the taxpayer information for the person listed first on the return. *


Payment Information

  1. Enter the payment amount due as shown on the return
  2. Enter the payment date.  The date will default to TODAY unless you change it. Payments can be scheduled up to 12 months in advance. 
  3. Submit and print the confirmation page showing the payment type amount, date, and year applied to.


*If you file jointly with your spouse, use the name and SSN of the person listed first on the tax return.

Identity verification uses a prior‑year tax return. 


**If your Identity Verification fails or the most recent year is not listed, select an earlier year and re‑enter your information. This does not affect how your payment is applied.

  Use this option if you are making a payment on your extended return.

  4. Tax Year: The year of the return that is being extended

Use this option if you are making a payment for a quarterly estimated tax payment

  4. Tax Year: The year of the return the estimated tax payment should be applied to

  1. Enter the payment amount due for the estimated tax payment
  2. Enter the payment date.  The date will default to TODAY unless you change it. Payments can be scheduled up to 12 months in advance. 
  3. Submit and print the confirmation page showing the payment type amount, date, and year applied to.

MINNESOTA PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Additional Information - Paying from your Bank Account

  • Payments must be made from a domestic bank account (located in the US)
  • Confirm the payment date before submitting
  • Electronic payment may be required once thresholds are met

Use this option if you are making an estimated tax payment for a specific quarter.  Select Estimate as the payment type.

Steps:

  1. Select Bank Account
  2. Select  Individuals: Use the e-Services Payment System  
  3. Choose No, I am not using a Letter ID (unless you received one).
  4. Select Customer Type: Individual
  5. Select Tax Type: Individual Income Tax
  6. Enter SSN, last name, and email address.
  7. Select Estimate as the payment type.
  8. Select Year the Estimate will be applied to for Filing Period for Payment 
  9. Enter payment amount and payment date.
  10. Submit and save the confirmation page.
